And the Community Grant Awardees are …

apech-final-red-and-white-letters-jpegThe Arizona Partnership to End Childhood Hunger is pleased to announce 12 Community Grant Awardees.  These organizations were awarded grants based upon their plans for alleviating childhood hunger in Arizona.  

 

Here they are:

Cornucopia Community Advocates, Sedona:  Purchase child specific food and backpacks for distribution in Beaver Creek School Summer Food Program.

Cultural Cup Food Bank, Phoenix:  Purchase specialty food items and food gift cards for those with medical or religious dietary restrictions, as needed, who come to this agency seeking Emergency Food Assistance.

The Civitan Foundation, Inc., Phoenix:  Purchase food for and assemble food baskets for recipients of emergency food services from Williams Food Bank, using the help of Camp Civitan campers who are developmentally disabled.

St. Anne’s Mission, Ganado:  Buy healthy foods that are diabetic friendly to deliver weekly to individual families.

Navajo County Public Health Services – Nutrition Services, Holbrook:  Purchase food, plates, utensils, etc. and other materials to present food demonstrations to introduce WIC Moms and their children to the new foods that will become available in the WIC package in 2010.

Valley Food Box, Inc., Marana:  Create a “Summer Snack Pack” program by providing FREE sack lunches to al Avra Valley/Marana children during the Summer of 2009 which this funding will supplement by purchasing milk, juice, water bottles, peanut butter, jelly, bologna, bread, applesauce, mustard, mayo, ketchup and other non-food items to contain the food or help the recipient child eat it.

Graham County Interfaith Care Alliance, Inc., Safford:  Purchase food to supplement Community Food Bank shipments to assure balanced and nutritious diet for children in the community for families in need.

Wesley Community Center, Phoenix:  Purchase food for Summer Program to provide breakfast and lunch, as well as snacks for participating youth.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Phoenix:  Starting a new program to help children & their families spend time together while fostering healthy eating habits. This will include learning to prepare food at home safely with a focus on good nutrition, and to learn what good nutrition looks like through food journaling, experiencing new foods, and helping prepare it themselves.

Empowerment Systems, Inc., Apache Junction:  Organize a “Food for Thought” program in Apache Junction which will include purchasing food and supplies for educational cooking and tasting workshops with participating families and their children.

Tiger Mountain Foundation, Phoenix:  Buy seeds, transplants, and chicken feed (for their egg producing chickens) for their three community garden projects in South Phoenix (KEYS Community Center, Tanner Gardens residents and one other) and provide stipends to individuals who help maintain these gardens, and possibly expand their gardening sites to include three new sites under development.

Mountain Park Health Center – Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program, Phoenix:  Purchase food and equipment to deliver food demonstration and tasting activities with WIC moms and caregivers using the additional foods that will be added to the new WIC food package beginning in 2010.
 
So what exactly is the Arizona Partnership to End Childhood Hunger? It is a collaborative effort between families, state and local government and community based organizations, volunteers and anti-hunger professionals to end childhood hunger in Arizona. The collaborative is based on ten key strategies:

  • Encourage Healthy Food Choices
  • Increase Families’ Access to Affordable, Fresh Produce
  • Improve Working Families’ Economic Security
  • Provide Comprehensive Public Education about Available Assistance
  • Maximize Participation in the Federal School Breakfast & Lunch Programs
  • Help After-School Programs Provide Healthy Meals & Snacks
  • Expand the Reach of the Summer Food Service Program
  • Maximize Participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
  • Ensure Access to a Nutritious Diet for All Pregnant Women and Preschool Children
  • Ensure Access to Nutritious Food in Shelters and Food Pantries
