Children who face food insecurity in kindergarten fall behind their peers in reading and math by the third grade, and are more likely to become obese and have mental health issues as adolescents, according to a new report released by the Partnership for Economic Success.

The study finds that food insecurity among young children effects their overall social and academic development, and can lead to economic problems for society as a whole.

The study Reading, Writing and Hungry: The Consequences of Food Insecurity on Children and on our Nation’s Economic Success was written by researchers from the Children’s Sentinel Nutrition Assessment Program and the Food Research and Action Center.
